Dan Rather Signs Off

(CBS) Dan Rather ended an era at CBS News on Wednesday night by signing off as Evening News anchor with a familiar message: "Courage"

After the broadcast, about two hundred CBS News employees crowded the Evening News studio and gave Rather an ovation that lasted several minutes.

Rather said the ovation was "overdone," but then noted that anything worth doing was worth overdoing.

The newsman's wife of 48 years, Jean, stood near the anchor desk, smiling but wiping tears from her eyes. CBS News executives and correspondents toasted Rather with champagne and Wild Turkey, Rather's favorite adult beverage.

Beauty is more than skin-deep

Linda, a woman in my on-line diet community, reached two goals yesterday. First, she reached her goal weight of 125 pounds after losing 105 lbs! Isn't that phenomenal? The next goal she celebrated was wearing jeans she purchased in 1989 when she first met her husband! They fit her perfectly and she looks fabulous.

But what I'd like to say about Linda has nothing to do with her weight loss or figure.

It's about her heart. She is the first to welcome new members to the site and the first to applaud accomplishments. She always has nice things to say. She never joins in the flame throwing or name calling. Linda is nice.

Linda is an example of kindness, compassion and inner happiness. I'm so happy I've come to know her through an on-line community.

Hibiscus Punch

I found some Hibiscus petals at the health food store yesterday. On HealthRecipes I discovered this nice recipe for using the hibiscus petals:

HIBISCUS This is a lovely annual flower with beautiful red flowers, commonly grown in flower gardens or indoor pots. The flowers are not just for ascetic pleasure, but have amazing flavoring qualities. In Africa, Karkade is the name given to a delicious hibiscus punch.

Karkade: Hibiscus Punch
2 cups water
2 heaping tsp. hibiscus flowers
2 cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon small piece of vanilla pod

Add to boiling water and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey. Can be served hot or cold.

Kindness starts early

Today my three year old son Max and our dog were playing. Our dog picked up one of Max's trains in his mouth. Max said to our dog, "We don't eat trains... people are nice to trains". I was touched that even at the age of 3, Max felt a lesson in kindness was appropriate, even if he was giving the lesson to our dog. It's never too early to make kindness part of our daily routine.

Fresh Flowers

Aren't you just itching for a little taste of Springtime?

Yesterday at Sam's club we found fresh flowers on sale. Two bunches of carnations: 25 pink and 25 pale green - 50 stems all together. We added a bundle of one dozen peach-colored roses. Once home we arranged them in a vase and for less that $20 we have a nice taste of springtime to enjoy.

Grab some fresh flowers today - It's nice!

Muffins

Nice today is warm muffins and a cup of coffee shared with someone special.

Here, from Bob's Red Mill is a wonderful, healthy recipe:

10 Grain Muffins

Ingredients:
1 large Egg, room temperature
1/2 cup Turbinado Sugar
1 cup White Flour, Unbleached
1 cup 10-Grain Cereal
1 tsp Sea Salt
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1-1/4 cup Milk
3 Tb Honey
1/3 cup Margarine

Mix Bob's 10 Grain Cereal and milk and allow to stand for 10 minutes while preheating oven and assembling other ingredients. Cream sugar and margarine and egg together. Add dry ingredients and milk with cereal. Sir only until mixed. Spoon into greased muffin pan. Bake in 400 degree oven for 15 minutes.

Yield: 12 muffins

Milestone Remembered

Just when you think all on-line communities are evil worlds of trollers and flame throwers someone comes along to spread the sunshine.

Yesterday a woman in my on-line diet community made a lovely post about my 5-year weight maintenance milestone! I had mentioned the date in passing, she quitely noted it and then remembered to celebrate with me. It made me feel so good. Lots of others joined in - there was no flame throwing.

It was Nice!

Why Be Nice?

Sometimes at the end of the day I'm simply exhausted by my world. It seems there is too much sarcasm, too much rudeness, too much flaming.

I need a safe haven where people are nice. I want to be treated nicely and I want others to be nice to me. Please and Thank You are not words reserved for kids in kindergarten learning good manners. Smiles are not endangered commodities. Kindness is not old fashioned. Rants, though popular, are not becoming.
